Fly of the Month

George Daniel’s Cicada

Tied by Bill Ninke

DanielsCicada

As Paul Revere might be shouting , “The Cicadas are coming, the Cicadas are coming”. Yes, fishable emergences of Brood XIV Cicadas are predicted for Mercer and Monmouth counties this year with light ones possible elsewhere. They begin to emerge when the soil 8 inches beneath the ground reaches 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Normally that would be right now. But the wet and cold conditions in New Jersey this year have delayed the emergence so tie up some of this month’s pattern and be ready when they finally do arrive.

The pattern is the design of George Daniel, the noted Pennsylvania fisherman, tier, educator and author. If you’ve followed his books, YouTube videos and Fly Fishing Show talks, he’s been on a kick in recent years to simplify fly fishing. His pattern is in that mold in that he has simplified the Cicada pattern of Greg Hoover, the Penn State professor of Entomology, removing the orange/black chenille body and just letting the orange thread wraps over the black foam achieve the same effect as the mottled chenille. The belly of the top fly in the photo shows this.

For tying instructions you can check out Daniel tying his pattern at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0Kv2-KZ2aY

I tie this pattern exactly as he does. For my own amusement I’ve added some eyes with red nail polish. In his video he doesn’t always give details of some of the materials but I’ve figured them out and present them in the materials listing.

Cicadas make lots of noise so walk and listen for them so you know where to fish this pattern. As for fishing technique, cicadas are clumsy fliers and when they hit the water they hit hard.so splat this pattern down. Many fish species other than trout will eat this pattern including bass, large panfish and even carp.
