Agust Gudmundsson

agust2

Agust Gudmundsson was born in Reykjavik Iceland, and emigrated to NJ in the 1960's. Where he spend his youth with a fiberglass Garcia Ambassador fly rod strapped to his green Huffy single speed bicycle, discovering the trout streams in northern NJ. Took a fly tying course with TU in 1975, and has been a member of CJTU since the 1980's. He has served on the CJTU board, and was CJTU president, NJ state Council Chairman and has been involved in National TU issues since the mid 1990's. He was also appointed to the NJ Fish and game council by Gov. Christie and served for over 11 years on the council, 8 of those as chair of the fish committee. During 2020 Agust relocated to Colorado, for work but he continues to be a member of CJTU. He has fished for trout in quite a few interesting places in the continental US as well as Canada and Iceland.

Tuesdays, presentation will include a discussion of several NJ streams, as well as some chats about the trout fishing here in Colorado and Montana. While not a travel piece, it should be an interesting discussion with one of our own. Questions will be encouraged and an open discussion should be fun.

Ben Turpin - Guide Lesson’s

benturpin Ben Turpin’s Guide Lesson’s program was designed to help the average fly fisherman to take their game to the next level by learning how guides prepare for their day and execute their plan, From picking the best stream and selecting flies to presenting the fly with the perfect cast. It is all covered in Guide Lessons. Topics of discussion will cover casting and practice, presentation, fly selection, stream selection, approach and much more. When you start thinking and planning ahead like a guide your success rate will rise.

Ben Turpin has been building fly rods and guiding the Poconos, Eastern, and Central Pennsylvania for over 20 years. His home stream is the McMichael Creek, a tributary to the Brodhead, near Stroudsburg, PA, were he works as a stream manager and guide for the historic Pohoqualine Fish Association. When he’s not working at the club you can often find him guiding the Upper Delaware, Brodhead Creek, or the one of the many great trout streams of Eastern, PA. Ben has shared his knowledge of the Pocono streams for many years and in 2018 co authored Keystone Fly Fishing and wrote an article for Fly Fisherman Magazine on the historic Brodhead Creek.

When Ben is not guiding you can find him working in his rod shop or tying flies. If your interested in finding more information on fishing the Poconos with Ben and his fellow guides please check out www.BenTurpin.com

Matt Delorenzo - Fly Fishing In The High Peaks

mattdelorenzo

November's presentation will be “Fly Fishing the High Peaks,” with Matt Delorenzo. Join Matt while he talks about fishing in the Adirondak region and all it has to offer.

As many of you Ausable anglers know, Matt, a guide and manager for the Hungry Trout, grew up in the fishing business working his fathers charter service on the trout rich waters of Western New York. He has been a licensed guide for close to two decades and is an organized and professional. Matt prefers backcountry brook trout trips and fishing heavy pocket water. He is also a very productive fly tier, who pumps out detailed patterns. Matt is an Army combat veteran and also Hungry Trout's head hunting guide, he is very passionate about hunting with his French Brittanies “Louis and Patton”. Matt is a highly requested guide for a reason, he finds the fish. Known for digging into his secret stash of custom bugs and his over-organized fly boxes, he always has the fly for the job and is willing to go the extra mile for his sports. Matt loves Brook trout no matter where they are found. Small streams, lakes, ponds or puddles he will chase them there. He’s been known to find a few other big fish as well.

Tim Flagler – Night Fishing

Tim_Flagler

When the sun goes down the activity on the stream goes up. Join us when Tim Flagler explores this special time to be on the water. There will be tips, techniques and things to look for that’ll help you to catch more fish in these sometimes difficult conditions.

Tim, a videographer and fly tier, is the owner of Tightline Productions, L.L.C., a video production company located in Califon, NJ. Although Tightline produces video programs over a wide range of topics, their specialty is fly fishing. Almost every week they produce a new fly tying or “how to” video which appears not only on their Vimeo and YouTube channels but on Midcurrent and the Orvis fly tying blog as well. These videos often get picked up by other sites too, including Frankenfly, Chiwulff, The Limp Cobra, Globalflyfisher, Gink and Gasoline and Wideopenspaces, just to name a few. Many of the tying videos take the viewer well beyond just the tying of the fly and show what it looks like underwater, what natural it represents and how it can be fished.

President’s Letter

marsha

Welcome Back! We hope that you have enjoyed Summer, that you continue to be well and safe, and that you and your families were safe during the recent storms. Now that we are moving into Fall, we can look back at all that we accomplished in the first half of the year with satisfaction. We had great monthly Speakers and Presentations, we participated in the Musconetcong River Cleanup and we held a great, indoor, in-person Picnic!

Although some of us might have initially been leery of Zoom, it has been a friend to CJTU, and other Chapters during the challenging last year and a half. Zoom has helped us to stay connected to our members. We have held Board Meetings via Zoom and kept up with the business of managing the Chapter. General Meetings with great Speakers have been accessible to all, including friends from other Chapters. And, our attendance has grown and remained steady.

Coming up this Fall, we have a great lineup of Speakers arranged for General Meetings. In September, our own Agust Gudmundsson will be back with us talking about NJ Streams and trout fishing on Colorado and Montana. In October, Ben Turpin will talk about “Guide Lessons” and helping anglers get to the next level in their skills and know how, and PA Streams. And, in November Matt DeLorenzo will speak about ”High Peaks”, fishing the Adirondacks.

On September 19th CJTU will partner with the Ernest Schwiebert TU Chapter at “Trenton River Days”, a family fun day full of all kind of activities. We will help teach casting and tying to young people. This will be held at Park near the Trenton Thunder Stadium from 11am to 3pm on September 19th. If you are interested in helping please let me know at casabeno@msn.com. This is a good collaboration and a great opportunity for Outreach!

With sadness we note the passing of George Hryvniak, a Past President and long time member of CJTU.

We continue to need a Permanent President for CJTU. Think about how you might serve in the role!

In January of 2022 CJTU will again have a booth at the Fly Fishing Show in Edison. The dates for the show are January 28-30. We are looking for Volunteers to staff our booth. Please consider supporting the Chapter and helping out. If you are interested in working at this event please let me know at casabeno@msn.com.

Fly of the Month

Cinnamon Flying Ant

Tied by Bill Ninke

Cinnamon Flying Ant

By this time of year the thick hatches of aquatic insects are long gone. But there can be thick falls of flying ants. Just what are flying ants? They are sexually mature versions of those ants we find crawling around our gardens. When an ant colony is ready to expand many males and females develop wings and leave their colonies with the purpose of mating and forming new colonies. They collect in great numbers to help protect themselves from predators and give themselves a better chance of finding a mate. When a mating swarm is over a stream some tumble down and create a feeding frenzy by the local trout. So if you are fishing at the time of such an “ant fall”, you’d better have a flying ant pattern in your box.

This month’s pattern is my amalgam of a number of published patterns for flying ants. I’ve tied and photographed it in cinnamon colors since I’ve found that locally this color scheme fishes best for me. But you can also tie it in black or black and cinnamon. The pattern is a candidate for all sorts of material and hook variations. I’ve used UV Ice Dub but Antron Dubbing, Superfine, and many others will work just fine. The flash in the wings helps both the trout to pick out the fly and also the angler to spot the fly as it drifts. I’ve used Krinkle Mirror Flash but Hareline Lateral Scale seems the same material. Or Saltwater Flashabou will work just fine. The wing can be any of the Poly Yarns. I’ve used Hareline Polypro but Semperfli, Wapsi, or McFlylon will do. If your eyes are bad, use a hot color instead of white. If your eyes are super, use 2 or 3 dun colored CDC feathers.

If I tie the pattern on a standard hook, I use a down eye dry. With a fluorocarbon tippet, the leader at the fly tends to get submerged eliminating the surface light steak seen by a trout from below caused by a floating tippet. The idea is to not give any unnatural surface impressions near the fly. A new idea I’m just trying is to use a jig hook. The tie in of the fluoro is well below the surface assuring no unnatural impression. This is an idea of Welsh Tier Nick Thomas published five years ago but widely hitting the rounds of the internet Forums and YouTube only recently. Lots of dry patterns can be tied and fished on a jig hook. Give the idea a try.
